How to Change Careers

Check out this TED Talk about the challenges and excitement of changing career paths.

I have heard that the average professional changes careers 5-7 times, which would have sounded crazy to me before I spent several years in the labor force after college graduation. Now, I think I may have even hit that mark already.

As times are changing, so are the desired outcomes of career and life for many professionals.

Click the above link and watch the video for new and different ideas about changing careers.

What They Don't Tell You In College About Career Fulfillment

In society, we are basically told to choose a career path, based on what we are interested in before college even starts, then climb the ladder to management, get a big mortgage, and stay in that management position, possibly until retirement.

I can't remember a time when the idea of career fulfillment or happiness were mentioned throughout my time at university.

The following link has a video that talks about the concept of career fulfillment.

Make sure to watch the video and take the speaker's ideas into consideration as you move through your professional life.

Getting Into a New Field Without Job-Specific Experience

During the job search, it seems like a majority of jobs require two-years experience, even at the entry level.

For many of us, we see this requirement as a disqualification, but for those of us who believe we have the skills to fulfill the job requirements, there is an opportunity to high light those skills that are relevant to the job.

Consider relevant skills used at other jobs, internships, even for college courses, then craft your application, resume, and cover letter to the job focusing on those skills.

Check out the following article about Getting Into a New Field Without Job-Specific Experience

Management Is Not Always The Right Path

Society teaches to find what we want to do, turn it into a career, then to succeed at that career and move up the corporate ladder. That ladder eventually leads to management a majority of the time.

The problem is that management is a specific set of skills. skills which may be dramatically different than those of the career that one chooses to pursue.

In several cases, management can be the right path, but in many, it may be far from an improvement in one's career life.

Watch the video and read the blog post about the management path and career alternatives

Elevator Pitch for Job Seekers

Setting the tone for any interview should be a conscious effort where a deliberate first impression is made.

Its funny that those who are the best at interviewing get to use the skill the least. That's because they're hired quicker than those who don't interview as well, even if they are more qualified.

Yes, education and experience are important, but when it comes to landing your next dream job, your interview will quite possibly outweigh your competition's qualifications.

Here's a link for a video that will help you - Elevator Pitch for Job Seekers

Check out the video at the above link, then begin perfecting your elevator pitch and land your next desirable job!

Life Goals

A little while back, I wrote a blog post about defining life goals and achieving them.

The final product came out a bit differently than I had originally planned.

One of the most interesting perspectives I obtained in my information gathering was the definition of "End Goals vs. "Means Goals"

Instead of leaving a summary of my article here, click the link above to watch the keynote speech and read the article I composed about understanding what an "end goal" is and how to define fulfilling goals in one's life.

Air Force Training with McConnell's Tankers

Tankers from McConnell AFB recently engaged in training missions at Nellis AFB, North of Las Vegas.

These missions allow pilots of tankers and fighters to practice their in-combat missions. The goal of these exercises is to immerse pilots in the conditions of air combat and refueling. A task that would be impossible with ground training alone.

The tankers are vital because of the amount of time and money it costs to perform these missions when landing, refueling, and taking back off.

These exercises are far more effective when using the tankers because fighters are able to spend much more time in the air, training.

Without the use of Wichita's tankers, the combat training exercises would not be as cost-effective or efficient.

Giant thanks to all of our Wichita service men and women who were involved in these exercises.

Thank all of you for your service!
